Arc or Straight putting stroke?
Published by Tom Boucher
Many people believe they have a straight putting stroke when, in reality, a slight arc is more natural and effective for putting. There are a few reasons for this misconception:
Visual Misinterpretation: When golfers watch themselves putt from behind or see their putting stroke in a mirror, it can appear straight to them. This optical illusion occurs because the putter head and the golf ball are relatively close to their line of sight, making it challenging to perceive the slight arc. A golf coach will be able to show your putting stroke on equipment showing the difference between straight and arc stroke.
Perception of Control: Some golfers may believe that a straight-back-and-straight-through putting stroke offers more control. They assume that minimizing any curvature in their stroke will result in better accuracy. However, this is not necessarily the case, as a slight arc can be more forgiving and help with distance control.
Influences from Other Golfers: Golfers often learn from watching others, and if they observe fellow players using a straight-back-and-straight-through stroke, they may adopt this technique without realising that an arcing stroke can be more natural and effective for most people.
Lack of Education: Many golfers may not receive proper instruction or coaching on putting techniques. They may not be aware of the biomechanics and physics involved in an effective putting stroke, leading them to rely on what feels comfortable or intuitive.
With the majority of golfers having an arc stroke and a blade putter being the best style to accommodate this type of stroke, Bertie Boucher putters have a toe hang of around 45 degrees which helps towards the arc stroke.
A putter is very unique to the individual and the correct putter for your stroke will help, nothing can beat the confidence of the player standing over the ball and feeling confident with the look of your putter at address.
